I have seen this done with delicious. It should be easy if the site you are importing from offers some kind of widget embed code. In Delicious, go to settings, then look under the heading blogging. They offer various items that can be included on your blog.
In your blog dashboard, go to design -> widgets. Then click on "Create Widget Template". Give your widget name, paste the embed code in the text box, and save.
Go back to design -> widgets. Click on the widget manager you want to add the linkroll to and use the grad and drop interface to place your new widget in the sidebar widget manager.
Brad, Thank you for the tip with linkrolls and the widget manager. I will try your suggestion. Now, when I viewed my course blog today after working on it last night, I notice that none of my widgets are showing. I really need my students to be able to see all of the categories to the right of the blog entries. Can you offer a suggestion? http://www.personal.psu.edu/mem435/blogs/aed303/blog/
Thanks!

I replied to you in email a while ago, but thought I'd post the answer here for the benefit of everyone who may be reading. Refreshing templates can fix this problem.
Go to Design -> Templates, then click on refresh blog templates in the right hand sidebar.
This will reset the blog templates to the default state.
You can emded content into your blog.
