How to get hits to a blog from a search engine?

I'm still finding the ground I feel comfortable standing on as far as being a fairly private person vs. there is some information I do want people to find and comment on. So, I have two very different blogs. The first I'm happy to just have a small following for -- not ready for the big time. The second blog I created is my genealogy. I want this to be findable so that others doing similar research can add to the collective knowledge. It was suggested that I add keywords (over and above tags) to increase the chances of a search engine finding it. I have done that for blog #2, but so far, if I Google for those keywords, there is no hit for the blog.

Inbound links will make you visible to the search engines

Google or other search engines must know your blog exists before it will index it for searching. The most common way search engines discover new sites is through links. If no other sites are linking to yours, then google will not find it. You can also tell google about your blog by submitting your blog url using this form.

You can also gain more exposure for your blog by submitting it to various directories. You could add it to the blogs at Penn State directory. There are probably genealogy resources and communities online you could use to spread the word about your blog and help people discover it.
